Ed Allen and Herndon injury lawyer Doug Landau enjoy the warmth of The Homestead
With snow flakes falling in South West Virginia, the lawyers, judges and legislators who signed up to play in the Annual Norman Landau Cup at the Virginia Trial Lawyers convention had to not only contend with a challenging Homestead golf course, cold and wind, but the possibility of losing their balls in the snow ! There was scant accumulation, but while jogging today in order to familiarize myself with tomorrow’s fun run course, where I would serve as a race volunteer, I noted it was hard to see the balls being hit when the flakes were falling ! Hopefully, the foursomes will wait for those ahead to move out of danger, yell “fore” and wear gloves with dry grips. Golf course injuries are no laughing matter, and wet, slippery surfaces increase the danger of golf cart crashes, as I have written in prior posts. No injuries were injured, and the top teams were heartily cheered at the closing banquet. When their fingers thaw out, they hope to shake the hands of all the well-wishers.

When a car turns and strikes a 50-year-old biker in Fairfax, it resonates with me, as I am now a half century and often ride on the County streets and trails of Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William. The Fairfax Times reported that Crash Reconstruction detectives are seeking witnesses to a crash that occurred on Sunday, November 14th near the intersection of Fort Hunt Road and Belle Haven Road. At around 3 p.m., a bicyclist was headed eastbound on Belle Haven Road. At the same time, a four-door 2005 Toyota Corolla attempted to turn left onto Fort Hunt from westbound Belle Haven. The bicyclist and the car crashed and the cyclist, age 50, was thrown from his bike. He was medevaced to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Detectives ask anyone who may have witnessed this crash to contact Crime Solvers by phone at 1-866-411-TIPS/8477, e-mail or text “TIP187” plus your message to CRIMES/274637 or call Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131.

It is not often that one sees the Federal Government recall of high end, expensive bicycles. However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of 370 bicycles due to an unsteady frame. According to Giant Bicycle Inc., the 2011 model Giant Anthem bicycles can potentially crack at the seat post, posing a fall risk for riders. There have been no reports of injuries as of yet, the company said.
According to the PR Newswire. Giant Bicycle dealers sold these bikes to athletes nationwide during August 2010 for between $2,200 and $3,500. If you or someone you know has one of these bikes, contact the PCSC at once and make sure not to ride this unsafe sports product.

Team Hammer Down CrossFit (with Coach Todd Katz in the Blue shirt) successfully trains runners of all shapes and sizes
As part of the Herndon Virginia Turkey Trot 5k this year the Herndon Community Center race organizers are joining with Nike and their Reuse-A-Shoe Recycling Program. The run organizers are collecting used running shoes which will later be ground up into small pieces and used to make basketball courts, track fields, playgrounds, floor tiles, new shoes and apparel. Shoes will be collected at the Herndon Community Center until November 20th. Injury lawyer Doug Landau of the Herndon law firm ABRAMS LANDAU, Ltd., cannot believe that someone would voluntarily take his smelly, worn running and athletic shoes ! If you have old rubber soled shoes that are no longer fit to wear, bring them to the Herndon Community Center on Ferndale and donate them to a worthy project (and give them a “second life” as a track or playground !).
Recycling rules from the Herndon staff to remember:
-We can only recycle athletic shoes (running shoes, sneakers, etc)
-We accept all brands of shoes
-No shoes containing metal
-No cleats or dress shoes
-No wet or damp shoes
-No sandals or flip-flops

Herndon Reston Virginia spine and brain injury lawyer Doug Landau with a gift basket from a thankful neurologically disabled client
Injuries to the brain and spine do not necessarily mean the end of exercise and sports. While brain injury can be a life changing event, advances in sports medicine and rehabilitation have enabled bike crash and car accident victims to remain more active than in the past. It is important to remain upbeat, active and exercise. As we used to say at ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) meetings, “If it isn’t physical, it isn’t therapy !” Physical and occupational therapy is essential to maximum recovery after a spine or brain injury. Nerve cells need stimulation for recovery and repair. Reorganization may occur. Synapses, that is the contacts between the nerve cells, may strengthen with stimulation and use. Sports injury lawyer Doug Landau has several hemiparetic clients who are paralyzed on one side of their bodies. To advance recovery from hemiparesis after stroke, one novel treatment, Constraint-Induced Movement therapy (“CIMT”), entails the temporary restraint of the functional limb while the patient is encouraged to carry out tasks with the paralyzed limb. According to medical researchers, CIMT produces greater improvements in movement and functional use of impaired arms and hands.
The repair of broken connections between nerve cells is poorly understood. Doctors understand that a sudden snap of the head pushes the brain so forcefully inside the skull that the long processes of the nerve cells are severed. This effect is known as axonal shear. Read the rest of this entry »

Trampoline accidents and injuries can be catastrophic due to the impact and damage to the spinal cords and heads of victims young and old. The issues of adequate spotters, padding and instruction are usually at the forefront of any investigation into a trampoline accident. However, when the trampoline itself is defective, catastrophic injury can result regardless of the number of spotters, pads and training sessions. Herndon Virginia sports injury lawyer Doug Landau of Abrams Landau, Ltd. examined the dangers of such equipment over 25 years ago in his article for the Practicing Law Institute, “…With the Greatest of Ease – Gymnastic Products Liability” (Sports & Recreational Equipment, 1983). One of the reasons Abrams Landau supports the distribution of free bicycle helmets for children is to put safe, non-defective sports equipment in play so no one gets hurt.
A California sporting goods company has recently announced a recall 160,000 sporting trampolines over the risk of the structures breaking. Bravo Sports announced the recall in conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission last week, saying “the trampolines, if improperly assembled, can result in weak support, posing the risk of the top rails or legs bending or breaking during normal use.” The trampolines were imported from China Read the rest of this entry »

Brain Injury Services (“BIS“) running races Sunday increased participation and money raised this year. Herndon Virginia Lawyer Doug Landau received word (and thanks) from the Director for helping to make the Kit Callahan’s Miracle Mile a success for BIS. There were close to 500 participants at the event this year. Runners, sponsors like ABRAMS LANDAU, Ltd. raised approximately $33,000. Doug Landau served on the race committee and handed out hundreds of race flyers for the events at the Fairfax Virginia campus of George Mason University. Members of the Landau Law Shop hope to be back next year to make these athletic and educational events even better !

Drs. Thomas Fleeter and Dennis Sager provide superb experienced medical support at the Reston Triathlon
Long time Reston Doctors Tom Fleeter and Dennis Sager have contributed generously of their time, effort and resources to the Reston Triathlon. Fleeter could be seen Saturday erecting tents and has previously been out on Lake Audubon with his son as a swim safety volunteer. Sager, an FAA Inspection doctor, has been a perennial presence under the medical tent at the South Lakes High School finish line area. Sager grew up and was friends with Mrs. Landau’s family in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Sager graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (“MIT”) as an Aeronautical & Astronautical Engineer and is an exceptional internal medicine specialist. Before athletes lawyer Doug Landau departed the United States to compete on the US Maccabiah Triathlon Team, he had his physical performed by Dr. Sager.
Dr. Fleeter, of Town Center Orthopedics in Reston, is the team physician for South Lakes High School and served as the medical director of the Women’s World Figure Skating Championship and the Reston Triathlon. He is also an orthopaedic consultant to the United States Figure Skating Association. And, as one who not just “talks the talk,” but also “walks the walk,” Fleeter is a strong cyclist who has participated in the Reston Century and knows routes through Northern Virginia that only a true lifetime cyclist would know. Dr. Fleeter and his Town Center Orthopedic partners have operated on and helped a number of ABRAMS LANDAU clients who have been injured in motor vehicle crashes, sports and on the job accidents.
Doug Landau and the other participants in the Reston Triathlon are lucky to have such outstanding, board certified specialists at this local multisport race. Thank you Dr. Fleeter and Dr. Sager.

Reston Triathlon Age Group Award Winner Doug Landau after changing into warm, dry clothes !
Injured athletes come back and finish strong at the Reston Triathlon. A team of three ABRAMS LANDAU clients and Triathlon Trial Lawyer Doug Landau would have given other teams in the popular Reston multipart event this past weekend a run for their money ! With Henry Tragle, Rob Urbach, Bill Coquelin putting in solid efforts, the Herndon Law Shop‘s clients demonstrated that hard work, perseverance and pre-accident conditioning can help an athlete recover from broken bones, lacerations and other car crash injuries. With three age group awards and several top 20 finishes, these clients support sports injury lawyer Doug Landau’s assertions that endurance athletes can achieve good recovery from car accidents, bike crashes and disabling sports injuries. The staff at the ABRAMS LANDAU is proud of these clients’ accomplishments, as well as those clients who continue to participate in non-competitive events such as bicycle centuries, fun runs and charity walks.

Looking for his triathlon race number and singlet, trial lawyer Doug Landau loses precious time in transition
Having no race number can cause an athlete’s disqualification. Doug Landau had carefully pinned his race number to his singlet the night before, and had brought it to Lake Audubon to put on after the Reston Triathlon swim. However, when he emerged from the water and removed his wetsuit, it was nowhere to be seen.

With his bike number on his shorts, a quick gulp and out Doug Landau goes past volunteer Kevin Baldwin to run down the competition at the 2010 Reston Triathlon
Since the numbers on his arms, legs, helmet and bike and the computer chip on his ankle would suffice for the next hour, Landau hoped that his shirt and number was inadvertently left at the second transition, when he got off the bike and began the 10 km run at South Lakes High School. When he dashed into the transition area, he was dismayed to see no shirt and no number.
“Necessity is the mother of invention.” So the saying goes. Looking around his transition spot, the injured athletes’ lawyer had an idea. Landau Read the rest of this entry »
