Due to the torrential rains that have struck Northern Virginia, the dedicated directors of the annual Reston Triathlon have decided to eliminate the swim for only the second time in the popular multisport event’s history. The following was posted on the Reston Triathlon Association‘s web site:

Swim portion of the 28th annual Reston Triathlon has been canceled. Our lake official has been checking the lake since yesterday and has come to the decision that in the interest of safety it is not safe to swim in the lake…there is widespread disappointment but “Safety Is First.”

All racers will be notified by email of the cancellation and of plans for a replacement run as soon as the board has met to determine the details.

Triathlon Trial Lawyer, All American Triathlete and Virginia Triathlon Series (“VTS”) race sponsor Doug Landau adds that racers should also be mindful of debris on the roads when cycling, and perhaps “preview” the course once again since the storms have ended. Tight turns with washout, leaves, bark and other organic matter on the pavement and an early morning start can all contribute to less traction on the road surface. “Let’s all bike safely – the Reston Triathlon race directors cannot sweep every centimeter of the race course, and road flooding requires extra vigilance on the part of all participants.” adds Herndon Reston lawyer Landau. “In light of these changed conditions and as I have at least 2 more VTS competitions this season, I am not going to be putting the ‘pedal to the metal’ Sunday. I encourage all participants to enjoy the race, the shwag and the comraderie and ride safely.”

The National Football League is looking into kickoff modifications in order to help ‘deal with injury numbers’ according to news reports this week. Indicating that it was a matter of safety, along with possible suspensions for player who make illegal hits, the NFL is recommending that kickoffs be moved from the 30- to the 35-yard line — as it was before 1994. Also, kicking team members must line up within five yards of the ball. This would prevent the kicking team members from lining up 10-15 yards behind the ball to get a running start. By the time these offensive players got downfield, they were at full speed.

The sound of the impact when 300 pounds of professional football player, sprinting at top speed, strikes another player moving in the opposite direction at maximum velocity, it something not soon forgotten. The momentum of each player (speed times mass) is truly shocking. The league recognizes the potential for devastating and career ending head, neck and brain injuries and is looking into way to modify the game while still keeping its essential features. Read more at the Washington Examiner.

Road racing in Richmond is safe, fun, entertaining, challenging and popular thanks to the Sports Backers Triathlon Trial Lawyer Doug Landau has competed in the National Duathlon Festival, Monument Avenue 10km, HCA 8k, Cross Country Championships and other events in the Capitol of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

My wife participated in the Half Marathon, which had course amenities like junk food stops and wet washcloths. Once again, the Herndon Reston area sports injury lawyer participated in the HCA 8km (5 mile) road race, along with Brodie Reid, who was also attending the “by invitation only” annual Virginia Trial Lawyers Association (“VTLA“) Advanced Workers Compensation Law Retreat. Richmond’s races are famous for friendly and courteous volunteers who treat you like more than just a bib number. There were musical groups at today’s race and one nearly every mile on the scenic course of the Monument Avenue event, along which several of Landau’s clients and lawyer friends live and work. Runner’s World magazine selected Richmond as a site for their Runner’s World Challenge and to confirm what the Sports Backers have been saying all along: The SunTrust Richmond Marathon truly is “America’s Friendliest Marathon”!

Injuries to the brain and spine do not necessarily mean the end of exercise and sports. While brain injury can be a life changing event, advances in sports medicine and rehabilitation have enabled bike crash and car accident victims to remain more active than in the past. It is important to remain upbeat, active and exercise. As we used to say at ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) meetings, “If it isn’t physical, it isn’t therapy !” Physical and occupational therapy is essential to maximum recovery after a spine or brain injury. Nerve cells need stimulation for recovery and repair. Reorganization may occur. Synapses, that is the contacts between the nerve cells, may strengthen with stimulation and use. Sports injury lawyer Doug Landau has several hemiparetic clients who are paralyzed on one side of their bodies. To advance recovery from hemiparesis after stroke, one novel treatment, Constraint-Induced Movement therapy (“CIMT”), entails the temporary restraint of the functional limb while the patient is encouraged to carry out tasks with the paralyzed limb. According to medical researchers, CIMT produces greater improvements in movement and functional use of impaired arms and hands.

The repair of broken connections between nerve cells is poorly understood. Doctors understand that a sudden snap of the head pushes the brain so forcefully inside the skull that the long processes of the nerve cells are severed. This effect is known as axonal shear. The Abrams Landau trial team has seen this in cases of head trauma or rapid deceleration car crashes. Contracoup injuries involves the stretching and shearing of the nerves in the brain, bleeding inside the skull and intracranial swelling. Extensive data has been gathered on the effects of ischemia, that is when the blood supply to the brain tissue is disrupted, and strategies are being developed to rescue nerve cells under this condition. For more on this interesting area of brain injury research and rehabilitation, click here.

The cycling crashes during the summer’s triathlon in Spotsylvania remind us of the importance of participants’ “previewing” the course before a race. Putting on a running, cycling or triathlon race requires planning, manpower and money. Yet even the most thorough race committee cannot foresee every potential pitfall or weather pattern. In the Fredericksburg area race, rain had caused some sand to wash out onto the bike course. Several cyclists were caused to crash due to the combination of speed, sand and bike control. The injuries these bikers sustained by wiping out on the pavement were devastating.

One of the cyclists contacted us at ABRAMS LANDAU because the crash caused severe brain injury. However, racers are expected to be familiar with the course, and going out, for the first time, full tilt during a race, is problematic. In sports, participants are said to have “assumed the risk of harm” by undertaking strenuous athletic activity. Such “Assumption of the Risk” usually precludes recovery for personal injuries, even in cases of permanent head injury and brain damage. This “voluntary assumption of risks” that were known or should have been known upon reasonable inspection (or the exercise of reasonable care) is usually an absolute defense to a personal injury lawsuit in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Bottom line, try to walk, drive, ride or jog the race course BEFORE racing. You will have the advantage of knowing the turns, hills and details of the race course, AND you will have reduced the chances of injury to yourself and others.

Even the best prepared athletes find that their safety and injury prevention equipment is not “race ready.” It is a terrible feeling to train for months, travel hundreds of miles and to arrive at the race venue only to find that a vital piece of safety gear is broken or missing. Doug Landau has had goggles break, wetsuits rip and bicycles flat at major sports competitions, so he knows what it feels like to be physical ready, but unable to compete.

Last Friday, after the Herndon Reston sports injury lawyer picked up his bike and triathlon racing gear from Velocity Pro bicycle shop, he saw that another competitor had a cracked bicycle helmet. Her damaged “aero” bike helmet would never pass the USAT officials’ inspection and she would not be permitted to race with such unsafe equipment, as her head gear would not protect her skull from impact and potentially severe brain injury.

Long time Reston Doctors Tom Fleeter and Dennis Sager have contributed generously of their time, effort and resources to the Reston Triathlon. Fleeter could be seen Saturday erecting tents and has previously been out on Lake Audubon with his son as a swim safety volunteer. Sager, an FAA Inspection doctor, has been a perennial presence under the medical tent at the South Lakes High School finish line area. Sager grew up and was friends with Mrs. Landau’s family in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Sager graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (“MIT”) as an Aeronautical & Astronautical Engineer and is an exceptional internal medicine specialist. Before athletes lawyer Doug Landau departed the United States to compete on the US Maccabiah Triathlon Team, he had his physical performed by Dr. Sager.

Dr. Fleeter, of Town Center Orthopedics in Reston, is the team physician for South Lakes High School and served as the medical director of the Women’s World Figure Skating Championship and the Reston Triathlon. He is also an orthopaedic consultant to the United States Figure Skating Association. And, as one who not just “talks the talk,” but also “walks the walk,” Fleeter is a strong cyclist who has participated in the Reston Century and knows routes through Northern Virginia that only a true lifetime cyclist would know. Dr. Fleeter and his Town Center Orthopedic partners have operated on and helped a number of ABRAMS LANDAU clients who have been injured in motor vehicle crashes, sports and on the job accidents.

Doug Landau and the other participants in the Reston Triathlon are lucky to have such outstanding, board certified specialists at this local multisport race. Thank you Dr. Fleeter and Dr. Sager.
