5/3 VTS Smith Mountain Lake sprint triathlon. Cook is the Race Director for the June Tim Harmon 5km race at the Fairfax Government Center and also works at Potomac River Running, Reston Town Center, on weekends.
A very safe course, 1/3 on pavement, then 1/3 on trail, then 1/3 on grass. It has one of the most spectator friendly layouts because the pool swim is indoors (with bleachers) and the run course is on a clover leaf pattern so that your “posse” and your “fan club” can see you SIX TIMES! Then you can enter the USAF Bike Races and get in all 3 Triathlon events !

5/11 *Centerville Sprint Triathlon, (Swim 250 meters, Bike 12 miles, Run 3.1 miles), put on by Chandra Richardson’s “Fins, Wheels & Feet.” According to Triathlon Trial Lawyer Doug Landau, this event had the best post-race feed around - cotton candy, ice cream bars, hot dogs - WOW ! www.finswheelsfeet.com

5/18 *Columbia, MD, Olympic Distance Triathlon, (Swim 1500 meters, Bike 25.5 miles, Run 6.2 miles). The Columbia Triathlon Association does an amazing job year after year. A very challenging bike course and the run is not “walk in the park” either. Race Director Bob Vigorito has a wonderful Expo the day before, and also puts on the Blackwater, Traverse and other top area events. www.tricolumbia.org

6/1 *VTS Reston Sprint Triathlon, (Swim 400 meters in outdoor pool, Bike 12 miles, Run 3.1 miles) Set-Up Events

6/14 Tim Harmon 5km., Fairfax County Government Center, 8:30 A.M. Register at www.RacePacket.com Race Director Tom Cook does an amazing job at a great weekend venue, complete with live music (the “Sock Monkeys” have serenaded the runners in the past) and a festival afterwards.

Pat Griskus Olympic Distance Triathlon, (Swim 1500 meters, Bike 24.9 miles, Run 6.2 miles). One of the “Best of the US” series races Triathlon Trial Lawyer Doug Landau did in 2006 when visiting Connecticut for his cases and Alumni Board service.

The annual Father’s Day SCSC (South Carroll Swim Club) sprint triathlon is an excellent event for first-timers and experienced racers to compete in a family friendly, enthusiastic and well-supported setting. The 400-meter swim occurs in an outdoor competition pool, while the 14-mile bike and 5K run showcase the scenic and rolling countryside of southern Carroll County, Maryland. Triathlon Trial Lawyer Doug Landau was 7th out of 239 finishers in 2005 with a time of 1:10:04, with a fixed gear bike (not on purpose). In 2004, The Herndon/Reston area injury lawyer won his age group by 4 minutes with a time of 1:12:09 for 3rd overall out of 150 competitors. www.southcarrollclub.com/news/triathlon/triathlon.htm

7/21 New York City Triathlon Olympic triathlon Swim 1500 meters, Bike 24.9 miles, Run 6.2 miles). You swim in the Hudson River, Bike through the toll booths on the Highway and then run cross town into Central Park. Like the D.C.Nations Triathlon, it’s a great tourist-Triathlete high !

7/26 2nd Annual Friends of the W&OD 10K — the Washington area’s race is Saturday, July 26, at 6:30 PM on the W&OD Trail west of Maple Avenue (Route 123) and west of Church Street.
Frederick, Maryland: Annual Cougar Biathlon, Run 3 miles, Bike 15 miles, Run 3 miles, Location: Frederick Community College

8/3 VTS Culpeper Sprint (Swim 750 meters, Bike 15 miles, Run 3.1 miles) set up inc.USAT Age Group Sprint Triathlon National Championship, Utica, NY USAT.org

8/12 Salisbury, Vermont: Lake Dunmore Triathlon, (Swim 0.9 miles, Bike 28 miles, Run 6.2 miles), Branbury State Park

8/19 ? Litchfield, CT Hills Olympic Triathlon, Brodie Park on West Hill Lake, New Hartford, CT. (1 mile swim, 23.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run)

9/1 Winchester Valley sprint Triathlon (Swim ¼ mile, Bike 16 miles, Run 4 miles). If this is anything like the wonderful Winchester Triathlon Races Don Stinnette and Neil Reimenschneider put on at Summit Lake, it will be fantastic. These events finished at the War Memorial in Winchester, and were done in when the local governments demanded more than $10,000 for permitting. Their races featured a “point to point” course, unbeatable preems (flannel lined jackets, Ron Hill Sport Tights, “hoodies”, etc.). You still see triathletes wearing the “swag” they got from these unforgettable races.

9/7 *Reston, Virginia Triathlon. Olympic Distance, but the bike is short, it sells out in a nanosecond. Be a volunteer. It’s fun, you’ll see your friends, get some “shwag” and have fun.

9/14 D.C. Nations Triathlon, Olympic Distance. You cannot train on the coure, and you will swim in the Potomac (and then run through a “decon tent” BEFORE you get to T-1, but the sightseeing on the course is amazing and there’s a Race Expo the day before at the mandatory packet pick up. Bottom line: When the mayor is in the race, permits get done ! They even built a staircase to get over the Jersey wall on the elevated Whitestone Freeway in Georgetown. Since it’s “point-to-point” arrange for a ride back to your bike; the wait for busses may exceed your race time…

9/20 VTS Big Lick Outback Big Lick Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon. set up inc.USAT National Age Group Olympic Distance Triathlon National Championship is once again returning to Hagg Lake, OR, but this time in the Fall. The water may be cold, but at least the bike course is hilly, narrow and not closed to deadly traffic. USAT.org

9/27 ITU WORLD DUATHLON Age Group Championships, Short Course, Rimini, Italy

10/4 VTS Acorn “BumpAss” sprint Triathlon, Spotsylvania, VA. set up inc. What a great name for a race! Stew is served after the race, though it’s not usually cold outside. Last year, Dr. Delaney and I went to another part of the Park to watch the triple Ironman Racers!

Osprey Sprint Triathlon, Public Landing, MD. Perfectly flat course after a shallow water swim, this is in an idyllic location at the end of Route 50.

10/31 GeezerJock Championship, Orlando, FL. While there are open and sprint races in conjunction with this event, the is MastersSports end of season finale. My bride was not thrilled with the prospect of my being a “GeezerJock” prizewinner at only 46!

Nov. Cape Henry sprint DUathlon, Va. Beach, VA. An end of season race on a flat course with serious competition. The Tidewater triathletes know how to race - hence their top placings at Colonial Beach and Virginia Triathlon Series events.

Brain injury lawyer Lauren Holtzman, shown here in the ABRAMS LANDAU conference room, recently explained to an injured triathlete why it is so important to get early documentation in a head injury and brain trauma case.

Juries are skeptical. It is important to have objective evidence. In other words, juries may “filter out” subjective complaints UNLESS there are supporting documents, photos, x-rays or other OBJECTIVE evidence.

It is for this reason that Herndon brain injury attorney Holtzman requests x-ray, MRI and CT Scan reports and definitive diagnoses from potential clients, rather than treatment notes and subjective journal entries. If you have been in a bicycle crash, attacked by a dog, struck by a car, disabled due to a defective bike component, bitten by someone’s pet, injured while cycling, or the victim of someone else’s negligence or unlawful behavior, call us at once. Remember, the more evidence, information and documentation we can gather immediately after the crash or animal attack, the greater the chances of success later in Court.

Looking over his “post mortem notes” after the Reston Sprint Triathlon Sunday, Doug Landau noted several key mistakes that cost him 3-5 minutes.

TheAthletesLawyer Doug Landau critiques his performances in all races, as well as all cases, in order to improve
1. Prepare as much as possible the night before. (Landau had not secured his Nimble race wheels to his bike ahead of time, and the loose screws resulted in rubbing against the frame, wearing out the tires and using extra effort to get up the hills. The wheel rubbing also forced the experienced racer off the bike TWICE to make repairs.

2. Freeze an inch or two of liquid in the water bottle if it will be a hot day. HOWEVER, take your straw out first. Landau blew it again. He could not get any liquid Cytomax during 80% of the ride because his straw was frozen. Then, in pulling on it to shake the ice out, he broke the aero bottle straw. He also did not have a second bottle because it was such a short race ! There was plenty left in the bottle after the race.

3. Start you heart rate monitor, stop watch, cyclometer, time window swim chronograph and other electronics BEFORE you leave the wall to swim. Stopping in the pool will result in your getting passed, cussed at, out of synch and smacked. Starting these things a few seconds before the Race Officials yell “GO !” will now corrupt your data.

Despite these mistakes, Landau swam the 400 meters in 8:07, for 9th place in the 45-49 age category. The Herndon brain injury lawyer followed that less-than-stellar swim with the fastest transition time (0:55) of the group and a decent 5th place bike ride in 31:48 (despite 2 dismounts for mechanical problems). The next transition was a little slow, but good enough for 3rd at 1:05, which, followed by the 4th fastest run in the bracket (22:43 for a hilly 5km.) resulted in an overall time of 1:04:36 and another age group prize.

This trio of Masters Competitors finished 13th (Urbach), 14th (Landau) and 15th (Reverte) respectively out of over 300 finishers. Urbach beat the Triathlon Trial Lawyer by over a minute, despite not having had the opportunity to train in all 3 disciplines (and not wearing a swim cap in the pool !). See tomorrow’s post for coverage of Landau’s mistakes. Just like any experienced trial attorney, TheAthletesLawyer reviews his performance and tries to learn so as to be better next time. There will be a re-match at a future Virginia Triathlon Series race !

What has happened is that rotational and other movements of the brain during trauma has resulted in injury to numerous axons in both cerebrum and brain stem. Brain injury trial attorney Doug Landau explains that this can happen as the result of a sharp, fast back-and-forth movement of the skull, or a rapid twisting of the head from an impact, or a high-velocity combination of straight and curvilinear motions of the body above the neck. This type of injury has been seen at autopsy following many days after the traumatic injury. In other words, the movement of the head during an accident causes the string-like nerve cells (axons) to stretch, tear or rupture. These specialized cells may not be able to repair or regenerate themselves. There may be swelling, inflammation or disruption of the electrical impulses that make up our “wiring.”

The brain is the “command and control center” of our “wiring system” points out brain injury lawyer Doug Landau. And when the wires are severed or damaged, the signals do not work as intended, with short, and sometimes long term consequences. If you or someone you know has been suffered a brain injury or has symptoms of a head injury, it is critical that they get proper medical attention and seek experienced legal assistance. At ABRAMS LANDAU, Ltd., we help adults and children from around the world with brain injury and head trauma cases.

This important concept explains both short and long term neurologic deficits in patients whose trauma did not produce either contusions, hemorrhages or lacerations sufficient to account for the deficits. Frequently, the latter lesions are minimal but the deficit is severe. Sometimes, notes Herndon Reston brain injury lawyer Doug Landau, there is a minimal laceration (cut) or not cut at all, but the neurological damage is significant. This is often harder on the innocent crash victim because they have no “Red Badge of Courage” to display to friends, family or their physicians to buttress their claims of disability, deficit and suffering. This, in turn can cause anxiety, depression and fear, especially in cases in the long and trying litigation process adds Landau.
