Washington Bike Center, Address: 13061 Fair Lakes Shopping Center, Fairfax, VA 22033 (703-968-2404) Definitely some of the friendliest bike mechanics around, they have an almost life-size map of the W&OD Trail on the wall of their elongated shop ! The Triathlon Trial Lawyer’s wife would not dream of racing without having these bicycle experts go over her ride first.

The Landau Law Shop is “down wind” and it’s all we can do to keep from running over and gobbling up their cookies, breads, scones and muffins every day ! Their coffee and other seasonal treats are also not to be missed. Margie and Brandon Shapiro and Ray and Cathy Pugsley make these stores a “family affair.” There are running groups, classes, seminars and race registrations hosted by this award-winning quartet and their friendly staff. They also know what they are talking about when recommending running shoes. There is even a treadmill with a video camera so that you can watch your stride and foot strike while ”trying out” shoes !

Reston Store Manager Dave Miller is shown here for scale (he’s 6’3″) next to the treadmill and video monitor. Triathlon Trial Lawyer Doug Landau has burned out a few of Margie’s treadmills, but for most people, like Wat Kukei of The Madeira School (and CBTF Spring Biathlon Relay Team Winner) shown with his new shoes after a video tryout, this set up works great.

He even got to test “preview” this purchase, along with some other contenders, thanks to Chandra Richardson’s “Endless Pool.” They have a large selection of swimming supplies and are knowledgeable about triathlons and aquatics.

USMS www.usms.org (United States Masters Swimming) Not only can you find a pool, but even make a connection with a Masters Swim Team in order to “drop in” to a practice !

Sport & Health Clubs www.sportandhealth.com You can generally get a free visit, and there are clubs on the road down to Richmond, in D.C., and up in Maryland.

Local Universities. The TraithlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau has contacted Universities and Colleges in cities he has visited in order to find excellent workout, swimming and running facilities. If you go to Boston, check out the M.I.T. pool (one of the 5 best indoor pools in the country) and Harvard University running track (curtains, banked turns and inclines); if you go to Fort Lauderdale, check out the United States Swimming Hall of Fame outdoor) Pool; and, if you’re on the West Coast, the Santa Monica College (outdoor) Pools are wonderful, inexpensive and huge.

Active.com Sports www.active.com. Individual & team sports activity registration in over 80 sports. Search and register for running races such as a marathon, half marathon, 10k, 5k, find training plans, gear reviews, share videos. Sometimes this site will link to the event’s own web site notes TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau, sometimes not. They send TheAthletesLawyer a lot of e-mails via their “Active Triathlete” portal.
American Triathlon Calendar. Triathlon and Duathlon Race Event and Result Listings in america and around the world. www.trifind.com also known as the “Triathalator,” this is a great site, as it enables you to search by state. TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau consults “triFind” whenever he will be going to a potential area where there might be a multisport event !

Atlanta Track Club www.atlantatrackclub.org Since 1964, dedicated to promoting health and fitness through athletics in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Includes race calendar and results. This is one of the premier running clubs in the country, with great coaching, events and programming. If you are going to Georgia, check the ATC out. TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau has raced in Atlanta Track Club events many times over the years, as he has clients in and around the city. One of TheAthletesLawyer’s favorite Atlanta races traces the Olympic Marathon course in support of the city’s Puppet Museum ! Last year this “travelling trial lawyer triathlete” was First Place Overall Masters at the Saratoga 5km in Lawrenceville (5/12/07) while in town for a negligence and injured workers compensation case !

Charlottesville’s Ragged Mountain Running Shop www.raggedmountainrunning.com Ragged Mountain Running Shop is a family owned business devoted to promoting healthy lifestyles by providing the best shoes and gear for the individual. Also has a link to the excellent Charlottesville Track Club, where, MANY years ago, TheAthletesLawyer broke 5:00 for the mile at the U.Va track !

Columbia Triathlon Association www.tricolumbia.org A non-profit association based in Columbia, Maryland that supports triathlon, duathlon and multisport athletes through race sponsorship and results. Robert Vigorito’s group is first rate, according to the TriathlonTrialLawyer, who has competed in four Columbia Triathlons and Three Blackwater Traverse Duathlons, along with many other Worldgate Masters and local multisport athletes. There is often an expo associated with these challenging and competitive events, and excellent post-race offerings, notes TheAthletesLawyer.

Cool Running www.coolrunning.com Cool Running is the complete online resource for runners, offering the Web’s most comprehensive race calendar, race results listings, training advice, and other “Cool” stuff.

DC Road Runners Club www.dcroadrunners.org The DC Road Runners is a chapter of the Road Runners Club of America. The DC Road Runners Club is a non-profit regional group to promote running in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. There are mid-week races throughout the year, track workouts, indoor meets in the winter and series races and special events.

FARC Fredericksburg Area Running Club www.runfarc.com Race results, upcoming events, news items, related links, running schedule, message board and contact information. TheAthletesLawyer has run in their events, as well as the multisport races hosted by the Falmouth/Fredericksburg YMCA. TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau also appreciates the effort top masters road and track runner Terry McLoughlin and his crew put in to the annual Pohanka Colonial Beach Triathlon.

FootWorks Running Calendar, THE Miami Florida area running shop. If you’re going to South Florida, check out their site for races, equipment and other events. www.footworksmiami.com calendar/calendar.asp

ITU Sport Development site for International triathlon news. www.triathlon.org This is another site that is a “necessary evil” according to TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau. Unless you are a card-carrying international pro, it is not the greatest site. It does not have information on races age groupers would be interested in, and TheAthletesLawyer rarey visits it, even when going abroad. Trifind is better, as is googling the country’s triathlon club and then the translation program (or “Babelfish”), if it does not have and English Language option.

Jersey Runner www.jerseyrunner.com What can we say, TheAthletesLawyer is a member of the New Jersey (and Hudson County) Bars, and travels to the Garden State, where he likes to race. In 2007, the TriathlonTrialLawyer competed in the NJ State 8km. championship.

LIN-MARK Computer Sports, Inc. www.lin-mark.com LIN-MARK Computer Sports! Your Site for Race Day Results, On-line Entry, LIN-MARK Computer Sports, Inc. is a highly recognized computer sports-timing company by athletes and within the sports timing industry. “Mark & Linda Toretsky are wonderful,” says TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau. LIN-MARK times local to national level championship events and their specialty is multi-sport events. TheAthletesLawyer has competed in their races throughout the mid-Atlantic, and they do a great job, even under adverse conditions. Lin-Mark provides the USA Triathlon MidAtlantic Region’s athlete’s ranking process. This includes all triathlons and duathlons in the states of: Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia. Lin-Mark also performs the USA Triathlon New England Region’s athlete’s ranking process. Lin-Mark designs and maintains the USA Triathlon MidAtlantic Regional web site. Linda Toretsky is the site editor. Lin-Mark provides it’s own timing staff and does not depend on volunteers for staff timing.

Metro Race Forum www.raceforum.com Applications & Schedules for the New Jersey Runner & Multi Sport athlete. This is one of the best race schedules the TriathlonTrialLawyer has seen ANYWHERE. If you’re headed North, check this one out. Their magazine is also great for finding races.
New England Runner -www.nerunner.com- Regional Event Calendar: News items, regional events and information, race applications, electronic newsletter and a physical magazine subscription information. This is a site TheAthletesLawyer uses when he goes North for his Connecticut, Massachusetts and other New England clients and cases. Even better are: Hi-Tek Racing for Connecticut running and multi-sport events www.hitekracing.com and Greystone Electronics www.greystoneracing.net. Will Graustein of Greystone puts on wonderful events all over the Berkshires, and is an accomplished runner as well.

New York Road Runners Club – they put on the NY Marathon, but their site is difficult and not as complete as would be expected, according to the TriathlonTrialLawyer. But, if you’re in the “Big Apple,” TheAthletesLawyer notes this site may reveal training runs, classes and other city-specific events. www.nyrrc.org Offering running, yoga, healthwalking, deep water running, and stretching clinics and training.

New York Triathlon Club www.nytc.org The TriathlonTrialLawyer notes that you will not find much “Southern Hospitality” with this group. Their races fill in “nanoseconds,” according to TheAthletesLawyer, and they do not send notice to past participants, as is customary in the Commonwealth. New York Triathlon is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to developing the sport of triathlon and related multi-sport events for racing.

Potomac Valley Track & Field Club www.pvtc.org The PVTC puts on the Potomac Valley Games, Indoor track meets at the incredible Prince Georges Complex and other running events. The TriathlonTrialLawyer ran the 2 mile and one mile his past summer and even tried the 1 mile race walk. TheAthletesLawyer got lapped (and several penalty flags) in that race, which he found humbling and frustrating. Next time, he might try the shot put !

Ragged Mountain Running Shop www.raggedmountainrunning.com
Ragged Mountain Running Shop is a family owned business devoted to promoting healthy lifestyles by providing the best shoes and gear for the individual. TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau has visited and admires the way they promote local school track teams, road races and carry a wide selection of shoes and gear.

Reston Bicycle Club, www.restonbikeclub.org The Reston Bicycle Club (RBC) was formed in 1982 to promote cycling in the Reston and surrounding areas. RBC is a volunteer, non-profit club, with over 500 members, the TriathlonTrialLawyer has ridden in their wonderful, annual Century Ride, as well as weeknight group rides from the Herndon Caboose, two blocks from the Abrams Landau office building !

Reston Runners www.restonrunners.org Reston Runners is a Northern VA running club that encourages fitness-related activities and the club is a member of Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). TheAthletesLawyer Doug Landau observes their Sunday long runs are a great way to get in shape over the winter. The Saturday shorter runs and walks are also supported, with route maps often online ! This is a wonderfully social and active group that has runners of all levels.

Richmond (VA) Road Runners Club www.rrrc.org The Richmond Road Runners Club has many races, and because of their and the Richmond Track Club’s summer events, TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau met his wife ! If you are going to be in Richmond, use this site to look and see what weekend or mid-week events they may have scheduled.

Richmond Triathlon Club www.richmondtriclub.com The Richmond Triathlon Club is a social club, dedicated to promoting multi-sport activities in the central Virginia Area. The fact tha xTerra National Championships, the World Long-Course Duathlon championships and for the next 3 (!) years, note TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau, the USAT National Age Group Short Course Duathlon Championships will be in this city is going to make the State’s capitol “multi-sport central.” The Richmond Sports Backers had a real coup landing these multi-sport festivals along with their already successful Monument Avenue 10km. road race. TheAthletesLawyer has registered for that flat, scenic event, which expects 30,000 participants, because while Doug Landau usually avoids “the maddening crowd,” this will be the 2008 U.S.National 10k road championship race, with the best runners from all over the country.

Road Runners Club of America www.rrca.org Representing over 700 road running clubs in the USA. A good resource to find a running club when you are traveling, as Doug Landau, the TriathlonTrialLawyer agrees that it’s more fun to run with a local group, than on your own. And some clubs serve snacks, socialize afterwards, and have route maps for out-of-towners.

Runner’s Gazette Calendar www.runnersgazette.com A monthly running newspaper that covers the mid-Atlantic region. In-depth race coverage, feature pieces, thought-provoking fiction, poetry, etc. Not fancy according to TheAthletesLawyer Doug Landau, but coverage of results from some of our local Virginia races and listing of multisport events.

Running in the USA www.runningintheusa.com Running schedule, pictures, related links, race results, news items and contacts. Running in the USA is dedicated to helping you find web sites for results, races and clubs.

Running Journal, Regional Event Calendar www.running.net/calendar/index.html , According to TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau, this magazine claims to be “THE ONLY CALENDAR YOU NEED TO RUN THE SOUTH … Running Journal Generic Road Race Entry Forms, articles, and unique coverage of the SouthEastern United States running scene.

Running Network – www.runningnetwork.com News, calendar, results, running links, and shoe review.

Set-Up, Inc. is now Set Up Events www.setupevents.com/?fuseaction=events&series=vts This is the home of the Virginia Triathlon Series (as well as NC, SC, etc.) . The TriathlonTrialLawyer says, “This group is great. Unique venues, close by races. A variety of distances. Useful prizes. Set Up has got their act together.” TheAthletesLawyer and his friends, training partners and even clients have enjoyed many races in and out of their series. Look for this group to grow even more in 2008.

Shenandoah Valley Runners www.svrunners.org The Shenandoah Valley Runners club (SVR) is a hardy group of over 250 devoted runners living in and around the northern Shenandoah Valley. TheAthletesLawyer has taken part in their fun events. They’re “off beat,” inexpensive an in interesting locations notes TriathlonTrialLawyer Landau, who tries cases in and around Winchester, Berryville and Harrisonburg.

SignMeUpSports www.signmeup.com This is where you have to go for many races to register, according to TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau. However, TheAthletesLawyer notes that it may not be worth the discount to join unless you do more than a dozen races a year.

CFT/Sommer Sports Events www.sommersports.com
Official home of Sommer Sports, Inc. and Sommer Sports events: TriAmerica Series, TriKidz, Central Florida Triathlon. TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau has competed in some of their races, in some very cool venues, including Surrey, Virginia and the World Triathlon Championship qualifier in Clermont, Florida. TheAthletesLawyer recommends you check their site out if going to central Florida. When Abrams Landau cases require Landau’s travel to Florida, he checks out the Florida sites and usually finds a race (or two). In 2007, the TriathlonTrialLawyer successfully raced in 3 multisport events in February and March, getting an early jump on his pre-season fitness.

TriCATs provides benefits to its members such as access to a network of local experts, training partners, and sponsors. www.tricats.org TriCats has a newsletter, puts on lectures by local experts and has social events as well.

USA Track and Field www.usatf.org The national governing body for track & field, long distance runnning, and race walking in the United States. TheAthletesLawyer belongs, as Doug Landau competes in several track meets each year in order to see how much speed he is losing to “Old Man Time.”

USA Triathlon www.usatriathlon.org The official governing body of triathlon in the US. Rankings, schedule, merchandise, travel information. “Not just for the pros” they say, but TheTriathletesLawyer has found their staff not to be the most helpful kids on the block. The TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau is able to keep his enthusiasm for their “Travel Desk” and help for age-groupers under strict control…

Washington Area Bicyclist Association www.waba.org The Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) promotes bicycling for fun, fitness, and affordable transportation; advocates for better bicycling, etc. TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau and staff members have participated in the WABA’s “Bike To Work Day,” which is a free event, with great shwag, food and programming in multiple locations in the D.C.
Time Window. People see the TriathlonTrialLawyer with an odd looking device on his racihng goggles. Is it a directional laser ? Is it an echo-location device ? Is he a cyborg ? NO – it’s the amazing “Time Window” a swim goggle timer. These ingenious devices, manufactured by Harry Linden, have been on the market for over 12 years. Harry Linden (lindensys@aol.com) LINDEN SYSTEMS, ATTN: Harry Linden, 146 South Sierra Vista Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93108 (Tel. 805-969-1895)

Newton running shoes have a unique feel as soon as you put them on, as they promote forefoot running. Not a good idea for heel strikers (or “heel-toe” running style), “toe strikers” like the TriathlonTrialLawyer have found them to be a good fit. In fact, TheAthletesLawyer has yet to get blisters racing in his Newtons, no matter how hot the weather or the competition ! Landau wants you to know that they are very expensive, and come with a lot of unnecessary shwag. The TriathlonTrialLawyer hopes that as sales increase, the price will come down. www.newtonrunning.com

Center Snorkel, Zoomers, metronome, etc. Finis has all the “weird” swim products you’ll ever need to keep you laps interesting. The toys Finis offers make swimming “almost fun,” says the TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau. The durable training aids almost make me forget the anoxia and the fact that I’m getting lapped. www.finisinc.com Manufacturer of Leading Swim Brands Finis, Zoomers, Lane 4, SwiMP3

Aqua jogger belt. http://aquajogger.com. The AquaJogger® buoyancy belt comfortably suspends you at shoulder level in deep water allowing you to breathe normally and move freely while performing a wide variety of water aerobics exercise. TriathlonTrialLawyer Doug Landau has been running in deep water (and shallow) for 20 years since suffering a fractured foot and ankle. He finds this form of non-impact exercise recuperative and limbering. If you have an overuse injury like shin splints, stress fractures, iliotibial band pain, heel spurs, etc., this can be a great alternative exercise to “pounding the pavement.”
